Geometry in the Montessori Elementary Classroom
For many of us, the subject of geometry was not introduced until high school. We were introduced to Geometry as theoretical science instead of practical one. Perhaps that is why so many of us found Geometry to be a daunting subject.
In Montessori classroom, however, the child is introduced to geometry concretely through the hands-on exploration of the pre-primary sensorial materials. Using the hand and senses to absorb impressions from the environment, the child build up a wealth of knowledge regarding size and shape upon which abstract concepts become firmly rooted.
